Security Sensors and Solutions

Security Sensors

Security Sensors are the advanced technology sensors that serve the purpose of providing security at residential and commercial places by detecting intrusion activities indoor as well as outdoor.

Types of Security Sensors :

Security sensors are categorized on the basis of the technology they are incorporated with. Below are the types of sensors used in the security industry for making different security devices fulfilling their respective requirements.

1. Active Infrared Sensors

Active Infrared (AIR) sensors detect the objects in their range by noticing interruption in the infrared path caused by moving objects.

Active Infrared Sensor (AIR)

Working of Active Infrared Sensors :-

AIR sensors are provided with two components, a transmitter and a receiver mounted in a straight line facing each other. The transmitter keeps on emitting the Infrared waves into the transmission medium (air or vacuum) which is then received by the receiver. The transmitted waves form an invisible beam like path from source to destination. If an intruder tries to cross the path, the number of infrared waves reaching the receiver gets reduced. As per the programming of the security system, this variation in the infrared waves is taken as an intrusion attempt.

Benefits :-

  • The AIR sensors can detect objects even in dark.
  • The devices operating with AIR sensors consume less power.
  • AIR sensors are compact and small in size.
  • The response time of AIR sensors is very quick.
  • AIR sensors can detect objects without being in actual contact.

Applications :-

  • Intrusion Detection Systems
  • Proximity sensors
  • Products counter
  • Automatic Doors/Boom barriers
  • Automated Lights

2. Passive Infrared Sensors

Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors detect the motion of objects or humans in their vicinity by noticing a change in the infrared radiations level in the surrounding.

Passive Infrared Sensor (PIR)

Working of Passive Infrared Sensors :-

All the objects and humans have some amount of heat energy which is emitted by them continuously in the surroundings in the form of Infrared radiations. Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors scan the emitted infrared radiations and create a heat map of the surroundings. With everything static in its surroundings, the sensor remembers the created heat map. When a moving object or person comes in the range of the PIR sensor, the amount of heat radiations being emitted gets changed. The sensor is programmed to consider this change as an intrusion attempt as per its programming.

Benefits :-

  • PIR sensors can detect the motion of objects in the dark as well with great accuracy.
  • PIR sensors make this automated by reducing human efforts.
  • They are very much energy efficient for the devices they are equipped in.

Applications :-

  • Intrusion Detection System/ Burglar Alarm System
  • Automatic Doors
  • Automated Lights
  • Motion Detection – Parking Areas – Swimming Pool Areas – Open Terrace/Balcony – Lawns

3. Microwaves Sensors

Microwave sensors are the ones that detect the motion of objects in their vicinity when the microwaves being emitted by the sensor and those being reflected back get distorted by the moving objects.

Working of Microwaves Sensors :-

Microwaves sensors have two components mounted side by side on the security device. One component is the transmitter sending the microwaves and the other one is the receiver of the microwaves. The transmitter keeps on sending the microwaves in the environment continuously which gets reflected by the static object in front and a fixed amount of waves are sent to the receiver. Whenever any other object or human comes in the path of the waves, the amount of reflected waves gets changed. This change in the frequency of the reflected wave is analyzed by the sensor and as per its programming, this is taken as an intrusion attempt.

Benefits :-

  • Microwaves Sensors are not affected by harsh ambient temperature.
  • They have a wide detection range with great accuracy.
  • Microwaves sensors are dust and smoke proof.

Applications :-

  • Intrusion Detection System
  • Automatic Industrial Doors
  • Remote Sensing
  • Speed Guns
  • Car Reversing System

4. Dual Technology Sensors

Unlike sensors operating with single technology like AIR, PIR or Microwave, there exist sensors using two technologies at a time. The most common combination which is found in many devices is a PIR sensor with a Microwave sensor.

Benefits :-

  • PIR and Microwaves sensors when combined provide excellent detection
  • The sensors combination makes the security system resistant to false alarms.
  • PIR and Microwaves sensors combination makes the devices very much resistant to all weather conditions.

Applications :-

  • Intrusion Detection System
  • Automatic Industrial Doors
